Description:

This coatee would have been worn by an American soldier around the 1830s. The included epaulet fits on the right shoulder, and there is a silver stripe on the left shoulder indicating it would have been worn by a captain. It is very small. The silver "YOUNG-SMITH & Co. NEW YORK" buttons have the eagle and shield motif with "I" stamped on the shield indicating the jacket was for an infantryman and date to 1830-1850s. The tails have infantry hunting horns near the tips. There are no identifying maker's markings. Several federal and state pattern coatees were in use in the 1830s and 1840s, but this appears to be an 1832 Pattern dress coatee. A stock collar with bow is included. The notes from the consignor state "Nathan Hawley, my Revolutionary War ancestor was born May 20th, 1753 at Trumbull, CT. Enlisted for the war March 28th, 1777. Wounded late in 1777 and spent the winter of 1777-1778 at Valley Forge w/Washington. His name was still on the rolls in 1781. Later was on the pension rolls of CT." The uniform may have been worn by one of Hawley's descendants given he would have been in his 70s by the time the uniform was made unless he was given the uniform for ceremonial purposes as a veteran of the Revolution. The year of his death has not been confirmed, but he appears to have remained active in local politics in Litchfield into the mid-1830s after moving to the area in the mid-1780s. Many members of the extended Hawley family from Connecticut served in the American armed forces from the French & Indian War on through the 19th century.

Rating Definition:

Very good with scattered moth holes, some minor tears, some absent sections of stitching, relined sleeves, moderate staining, and aged patina on the silver.
