Description:

The Model 1841 was nicknamed the "Mississippi Rifle" after Jefferson Davis' Mississippi Riflemen unit in the Mexican-American War. Though slightly old fashioned by the time of the Civil War since they were designed for patched round balls rather than Minie bullets, they were widely used, especially by the Confederacy. This is one of around 8,879 rebored for use with .58 caliber ammunition in 1855-1860. Most had their ramrods replaced with larger all steel rods, but this one retains the original brass tipped ramrod. It is dated "1850" on the lock, has standard fixed blade and notch sights, inspection markings on the barrel at the breech, "JLB" stamped on the left flat and the patch box floor, and spare nipple in the patch box.

Rating Definition:

Good with mottled brown patina and mild pitting on the iron, partially obliterated barrel markings (due to heavy primer pitting), attractive aged patina on the brass, a repair and some erosion on the stock between the upper tang and lock, minor surface chipping around the lock inlet, mild scratches and dings throughout, tension crack at the rear lock screw, and smooth re-oiled finish on most of the stock. Mechanically excellent.
