Designed by Erskine S Allin, master armorer at Springfield Armory. About 25,000 muskets were altered to .50-70 CF around 1866. This one has the standard markings and features and is dated "1864" on the lock and "1866" on the breech.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with most of the dull oil quenched case colors on the lock, faded case colors on the breech, and mix of bright surfaces, light pitting, and light patina on the barrel. The otherwise fine stock has some spots of darker finish, mild scratches and dings, a large chip/indentation visible into the surface by the rear lock screw, and legible cartouches. Mechanically excellent.
