This was the first slide action rifle Colt produced. It was intended to be a companion piece to the Colt Single Action Army Revolvers chambered in the same calibers. This rifle was manufactured in 1888 and features a folding globe front sight, adjustable sporting type rear sight and a tang mounted peep sight. The top barrel flat is marked "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A / PATENTED MAY 29, SEPT. 18, 83. MAY 26, 85. JUNE 15. 86. FEB. 22. 87." in front of the rear sight and "38 Cal." behind it. The Rampant Colt is marked on the left side of the receiver, and the serial number is on the lower tang. 15-shot full length tubular magazine. Checkered slide handle and plain straight grip stock with crescent steel buttplate.

Very fine. The rifle retains 80% of the original blue high polish finish with slight thinning on the magazine tube, receiver sliding dust cover and trigger guard. The buttplate has a smooth mottled gray patina. The top of the bolt shows some flaking and is a mix of original blue finish and smooth gray patina. The wood is also very fine with scattered minor dings and dents. The checkering is crisp. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
