Description:

Manufactured between 1865 and 1871. This unusual breechloading shotgun is marked on the hinged double breechblock "ETHAN ALLEN & CO. WORCESTER.MASS./ALLEN'S PATs NOV. 9. 1858 - SEPT. 18, 1860 - AUG. 22. 1865" and in Old English "Fine Stub Twist" on the barrel rib. The receiver and breechblock are decorated with light scroll and border engraving. The breechblock features a double locking mechanism with a lever on the right side (also used to raise the block), and the noses of the hammers on the rear of the block, meaning the hammers must be at half cock for the breech to be opened. Checkered forearm with single attaching wedge, and straight grip stock with a smooth steel buttplate. Stock measurements are: drop at comb 2 inches; drop at heel 2 1/2 inches; length of pull 14 1/4 inches. Includes a period tooled leather pouch with four (three spent, one loaded) steel "ALLEN'S PATENT" marked shotgun shells.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel have a mostly brown/gray patina with light Damascus pattern, small nicks and dings, and clear markings. There is a medium size dent visible in right forward portion of barrel, rear of muzzle. The receiver has a mostly gray patina with faint traces of original case colors, sharp engraving, and light spotting. The re-oiled wood is good with well defined checkering, small dings throughout, and hairline cracks visible on either side of the wrist. Mechanically fine. Leather pouch is about good with scuffs and age cracking. The shells have a mostly gray patina with some oxidation.
