Description:

This third Sharps model was redesigned by Richard S. Lawrence and William Jones based on a model submitted by Christian Sharps. The fact that changes were made to the design without Sharps' input helped lead to him leaving the company that bore his name. 1,837 were manufactured by Robbins & Lawrence in Windsor, Vermont, for Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Co. in 1852-1855 per Frank Sellers in "Sharps Firearms." It has a globe front sight, "squirrel ear" rear sight, "ROBBINS &/ LAWRENCE" ahead of the rear sight, "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/1845" on the primer door, "C. SHARPS PATENT/1848" on the upper tang followed by the serial number and a tang peep sight (rectangular base secured by a separated screw rather than threaded round style), brass furniture, and smooth stock and forearm. This one does not have a tap on the left side of the receiver for a sling ring. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel, back of the forearm, back of the breechblock, inside of the primer door, back of the lock, upper tang, inside of the patch box door, and inside of the buttplate. A single letter "J" is stamped on left side of barrel, near receiver. The stock was not removed, but it in the lock inlet, the barrel, forearm, hammer, primer door, lock, and hammer are all marked "16" or "T16." This was the last model before the Sharps rifles and carbines began taking their classic shape and was also the first Sharps model used by the U.S. military.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 40% combination blue and case colors on the action, aged patina on the brass, thin blue finish fading to a brown patina along the barrel, stronger blue and niter blue on the small components, some spots of mild oxidation/pitting, minor edge wear, and general minor marks. The lightly sanded and re-oiled wood is good with minor scratches and marks. Mechanically excellent.
