Description:

Approximately 50 of these New Model 1869 Sporting Rifles were manufactured in 1869-1872 according to the late Sharps firearms expert Frank Sellers in his book "Sharps Firearms." In addition to the small number of these rifles manufactured, there were variations in terms of barrel lengths, calibers, and other features making each of these rifles highly desirable. They bridge the gap between the earlier New Model percussion rifles and the popular Model 1874. The frames were still cut for the earlier percussion style hammer, but the distinctive thick lock plate has no provisions for a primer and is equipped with a cartridge hammer that does not strike as far forward as the percussion hammers. It has a dovetailed German silver blade front sight, empty rear sight dovetail, the three-line Hartford address ahead of the dovetail, "CALIBRE 44/NEW MODEL 1869" and "20" on top of the barrel at the breech, pewter forend cap with finial, "25" on the bottom of the frame and lock, the 1848 patent marking on the left side of the frame, a sporting peep sight on the upper tang, double set triggers, and a smooth stock with standard rifle buttplate. Matching serial numbers are located on the barrel, forearm, upper tang, lock, and buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 40% plus original blue finish mixed with brown patina, a bright strip where the rear sight elevator was, dark bluish brown patina on the lock, mottled brown and gray patina and traces of original case color on the balance, faint patent marking on the frame but otherwise crisp markings, and some light oxidation/pitting. The wood is very good with small dings and marks, strong oiled finish, and divot on the left side of the butt. Mechanically excellent. This certainly among the most authentic of the few surviving original 50 Sharps New Model 1869 Sporting Rifles.
