Barrel: 29 inch octagon

Description:

The breech lever has "Jas. H. Merrill/Patented/July 1858" in hand engraved script and the first type latch catches on a stud dovetailed into the top of the barrel. The engraved markings suggest this is an early example before Merrills patent stamps were manufactured given other sporters with stamped markings. It features a four leaf rear sight (one standing and one frozen up), a small one on the bottom of the barrel at the breech, small circled "R" on the nose of the lock on the back and an "M" near the center, "82" on the sides of the double set triggers, German silver forend cap and wedge escutcheons, iron remaining furniture with scroll engraving, and checkered wrist.

Rating Definition:

Very good with 20% of the period brown lacquer finish on the barrel and otherwise gray and brown patina on the balance and some minor oxidation and pitting primarily at the breech. The stock is very good and has crisp checkering, some very slight chips at the edges, and mild scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent.
