Description:

The Perry Patent Arms Co. produced a small number of military carbines along with single shot pistols and custom ordered sporting rifles in varying calibers and configurations. They are based on designs by Alonzo Perry. All Perry firearms are scarce. Most of Perry's rifles and carbines, including this one, feature a tubular magazine fed through the butt that held 50 percussion caps. When the breechblock is lowered a new cap was placed on the nipple. This Perry rifle has full octagon barrel equipped with a German silver blade front sight and elevation adjustable sporting rear sight, "60" or "09" is marked on the muzzle, "STEEL" is marked on the upper right flat at the breech, and the matching serial number is marked on top of the barrel and frame at the breech and on the lever.. The top of the breechblock is marked "A.D. PERRY/PATENTED" and "PERRY PATENT ARM Co/NEWARK N.J./1855". It is fitted with a smooth forearm and buttstock with German silver forend cap and escutcheons along with a slightly curved buttplate. Scroll engraving is on most of the frame, breechblock, lever, and buttplate tang. The engraving patterns match those on the Perry sporting rifle in the NRA National Firearms Museum.

Rating Definition:

Very good with a dark blend of faded original finish and brown patina on the barrel and hammer, lighter gray and brown patina on the balance, some slight pitting, minor edge wear and scratches, slight chips and mild dings at the edges of the wood, a stable hairline crack under the finish on the right side of the comb, and crisp markings and engraving patterns throughout. Mechanically excellent. This is a very attractive example of an incredibly scarce American breech loading sporting rifle from the mid-19th century.
