Description:

This sporting rifle is built on a Burnside Third Model type action from the early 1860s quite possibly by the factory as a sporter or for presentation. It features a globe front sight, two empty rear sight dovetails on an unmarked octagonal barrel, a "2" in front of the rear dovetail, checkered forearm with pewter nose and tail caps with ornate finials and a small silver shield on the bottom, unique folding tang peep sight, "BURNSIDE RIFLE CO./PROVIDENCE=R.I." on the face of the lock and "2489" on the back side at the tail, a single set trigger, "2953" on the underside of the buttplate tang, and high grade highly figured walnut stock with a blank silver shield on the right for an inscription and a plugged belly where a swivel base once resided.

Rating Definition:

Very good with areas of thin original blue finish, brown and gray patina, some light oxidation, minor pitting, aged patina on the silver, and general marks and scratches. A piece of iron was discreetly fit into a dovetail on the top of the frame and has the same patina as the surrounding metal. The refinished, otherwise good wood, has repaired cracks in the forend and wrist, a piece spliced in where the sling swivel is usually located on the buttstock, light scratches and dings, fairly crisp checkering, and attractive feathered figure. Mechanically fine other than the non-working set function.
