Description:

Deluxe Winchester Model 1894 Extra Lightweight, Takedown Rifle with 22 inch barrel, numerous special order features and Cody Firearms Museum letter. The Cody letter describes this Model 1894 as: "Rifle, Takedown, 30 caliber, Barrel Length: 22 inches, Barrel Shape: Round, Plain trigger, Checkered stock with pistol grip, Sights: Lyman Front, Leaf and Rear" and "Extra Lightweight". The letter further states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on October 1, 1904. The rifle has a tapered, 22 inch, round barrel and 3/4 magazine (not mentioned in the factory letter). The barrel has a Lyman "Jack" front sight with ramp and colored bead and two-leaf folding rear sight (one leaf has a wide vee and the other has a flat top with bright triangle). A Lyman folding combination rear sight with coarse stem is mounted on the receiver tang. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy grain, walnut with checkered panels and a piano finish. The stock has a black, hard rubber, pistol grip cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS" and black, hard rubber, checkered, shotgun buttplate embossed with the Winchester Repeating Arms logo which is erroneously not mentioned in the factory letter. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver and bolt have a blue finish. The loading gate is niter blue. The hammer, trigger and lever are color casehardened. The magazine takedown latch is marked: "-PAT. JUNE 6. 1893-". The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./-NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. PAT. AUG. 21. 1894-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" in two lines followed by "30 W.C.F." between the rear sight and the receiver. The serial number is roll stamped across the front of the receiver bottom. Model 1894 Deluxe Extra Lightweight rifles are very scarce.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. This scarce rifle is all original and retains nearly 98% of the blue and casehardened finish. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap and takedown collar have 98% plus of the bright original high polish blue finish. The barrel markings are sharp. The edges and sides of the receiver have very slight handling wear but the receiver has close to 97% of the blue finish. All of the blue is present on the bolt and the loading gate has nearly 99% of the fire blue finish. The hammer, trigger and lever have virtually all of the subdued case colors intact. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm retain nearly 98% of the original piano finish and the checkered panels on the pistol grip and forearm are sharp. Wear is limited to several very minor storage marks. This is a truly exceptional example of a scarce Winchester Deluxe Model 1894 Extra Lightweight Takedown Short Rifle.
