Description:

Deluxe Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring Carbine with Cody Firearms Museum letter. The Cody letter describes this Model 1886 as: "Type: Carbine, Caliber: 38/56, Fancy, Checkered stock" and "Pistol grip". The letter states that this carbine was shipped from Winchester on December 7, 1893. The carbine has a blue finish on the barrel, magazine, barrel bands and bolt. The loading gate is niter blue. The receiver, hammer, trigger, lever and carbine style buttplate are color casehardened. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, 3X, fancy grain walnut with Winchester factory "Style H" checkering and a piano finish. The bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The 22 inch barrel has a standard carbine steel block front sight base with blued steel blade located in front of the upper barrel band and folding leaf rear sight graduated to "9" and marked "1873" at the top of the leaf. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. A staple mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the two-line legend: ">-MANUFACTURED BY THE-</>-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN U.S.A-<" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber, "38-56/W.C.F." is roll stamped in two lines on the top of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll stamped: "-MODEL 1886.-". The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll stamped in two lines on the lower tang immediately behind the trigger. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the tang screws. Standard grade Model 1886 carbines are scarce and special order features are rarely encountered on any Model 1886 carbine. A deluxe Saddle Ring Carbine like this example is the rarest of all Model 1886 Winchester rifles or carbines.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. This carbine is all original and retains 85% of the original color casehardened finish. The barrel and magazine have 97% of the original blue finish. Wear is limited to some very slight thinning on the top of the barrel between the lower band and the receiver. The Winchester legend and caliber designation are crisp. Both barrel bands have 80% of the blue finish with scuff marks on the sides. The blue on the bolt is freckled near the extractor but is at least 85% intact. The loading gate retains nearly all of the fire blue finish. The receiver has more than 90% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors; wear is limited to some silvering on the upper edges of the receiver and thinning case colors on the bottom of the receiver and upper tang. The hammer retains nearly all of the vivid case colors. The lever has strong case colors on the sides with some silvering on the bottom and contact points. The buttplate has silvered on the contact points at the heel and toe but retains at 75-80% of the original case colors. The stock and forearm are both in excellent condition and have 95% plus of the piano finish intact. The checkered panels are extremely sharp. Wear is limited to a few scattered and very minor handling and storage marks. This is a truly exceptional example of an extremely rare Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Saddle Ring Carbine. This exceptional carbine that would be the centerpiece in the most advanced collection of Winchester lever action rifles.
