Description:

Manufactured in 1857 with the four screw frame cut for a shoulder stock. The matching numbered stock is included. Colt 1851 Navy Models are the most desirable of the Colt percussion model revolvers cut for stocks. The recoil shields and heel of the back strap have cut-outs for attaching the shoulder stock, and it has a special four screw frame, which has a screw on each side to serve as supporting lugs for the stock. The top of the barrel is stamped "-ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD CT-." The left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT. The cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas/Mexican naval scene. Two British proofs are stamped on the left side of the barrel lug, and additional British proofs alternate between the chambers at the rear of the cylinder. The left side of the trigger guard is stamped with the letter "M." The revolver has a dovetailed blade front sight as found on early four screw frame variations (serial number range 67000-79000), a hammer notch rear sight and a swivel mounted on the trigger guard. The barrel and cylinder are blue, the iron grip straps are silver plated, and the remaining surfaces are casehardened. Matching serial numbers are stamped on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder, loading lever (4666), wedge (4666) and arbor pin (4666). The walnut shoulder stock has silver plated brass furniture and is numbered to the gun ("74666" on the yoke and buttplate tang). The partitioned oak case has green felt lining, brass furniture, which includes the corner protectors and disk inscribed "CWD" on the exterior of the lid and directions label affixed to the inside of the lid. Accompanying the revolver are the following accessories: two W.&C. Eley Colt percussion cap tins, Eley Brothers Colt percussion cap tin, "COLT'S/PATENT" marked two cavity bullet mold, James Dixon & Sons Colt's Navy marked powder flask, "L" shaped tool, oiler, bore rod and three small containers.

Rating Definition:

Fine. 30% of original blue and casehardened finishes remain on the barrel and frame, respectively, with the overall balance between mottled brown and gray patinas. Most of the cylinder scene remains. The grip straps retain 95% original silver plating. The grip is very good showing heavy shoulder stock wear at the top and some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. The stock is very fine with the walnut having a number of minor dings and scratches and retaining most of the original "piano" varnish finish while the furniture retains 90% original silver plating. The case is good with a number of minor-moderate handling/storage marks, a long crack on the lid, a modified partition wall for the powder flask and some high spot wear on the lining. The contrasting wood key escutcheon is a replacement. The bullet mold retains 60% original blue finish. The powder flask retains 90% original brown lacquer and 80% original gilt. A highly desirable and rare Model 1851 Navy four screw variation revolver with matching shoulder stock and case that is a must have for the serious Colt percussion revolver collector.
