Description:

This unusual rifle features a windgauge globe front sight, engraved border around the "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. NY." marking and engraved scroll flourish at the breech, long range Vernier peep sight, and smooth forearm and straight wrist stock with steel nose cap and buttplate and a second mounting point on the heel of the stock for shooting from the back position. The stock has a slight "perch belly" shape. The bottom of the replacement barrel has "3169" and "L.L. HEPBURN/L.L. HEPBURN." "2662" is marked on the lower tang in individually stamped numerals. The history of the rifle is not clear. The non-matching barrel and non-numbered wood and buttplate clearly suggest modification by the factory or a period gunsmith.

Rating Definition:

Very good as rebarreled with strong niter blue on the breechblock and hammer, traces of case colors and blue finish, smooth gray and brown patina on most of the surfaces, some light oxidation, and minor marks and scratches. The eye piece is absent from the peep. The wood is very good with plugs in the mounting point on the heel, light scratches, scattered small dents, and smooth oiled finish. Mechanically excellent.
