Description:

This pistol is very similar to others known from Carlsbad (Karlovy Vary), Bohemia. In fact, the gilded brass side plate which has a scene of two mounted men riding out to challenge a third who has two women bound to a pillar is the same as those used on a pair signed by Gotlib Steeger from the first half of the 18th century that was sold in our September 2017 auction. The rest of the furniture is also gilded brass. The thumbplate has a woman, and the pommel has a monkey head plug and battle scenes on the sides of the cap. The lock has an engraved hunting scene with a mounted man hunting a deer with dogs in a wooded setting. The stock has raised relief carving and panels and a horn forend cap. The barrel has a blade front sight, wedding band transition, fluted upper flats on the breech section, and "- LAZARO - LAZARINO -" on top at the breech suggesting it was manufactured by of copied after the work of the famed Cominazzo/Lazarino family of Brescia who were renowned throughout Europe, especially in the 17th century, for their fine pistol barrels.

Rating Definition:

Fine as period shortened with smooth gray and brown patina along with some light spotting and pitting on the iron, mix of patches of original gilding and aged patina on the brass furniture, scattered minor marks and scratches, repaired cracks and chips in the forend, and mostly crisp carving and engraving. Mechanically fine.
