Only a total of 1,500 to 2,000 Ethan Allen patent drop breech rifles were manufactured in the 1860s and 1870s. Many of these were manufactured in the E. Allen & Co. years, but this one was manufactured c. 1860 under the Allen & Wheelock partnership and has the early two digit serial number on the inside of the forearm, bottom of the barrel, lower tang, breech block, lever link, and underside of the buttplate. The buttplate trapdoor and back side of the plate are also numbered "1085." It also features a blade front sight, barrel band with sling swivel, added dovetailed rear sight, "ALLEN & WHEELOCK/ALLEN'S PAT SEP. 18. 1860" on top of the barrel, an adjustable receiver sight, sling swivel on the bottom of the butt, and smooth wood.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus with brown patina along the barrel, gray and brown patina on the balance, some patches of original blue in the protected areas, minor pitting, and chipped front sight. The stock is very good with two cracks in the wrist on the left, some slight hairline cracks at the butt, and minor scrapes and dings. The forearm is very good and has some minor scratches. Mechanically fine.
