Description:

Following the success of the Bourbons in the War of Spanish Succession, King Philip V of Spain, grandson of the famous French "Sun King" Louis XIV, sat on the Spanish throne and remained closely tied to his uncle, King Louis XV of France. The pistols are certainly of the overall quality suitable for a member of Philip V of Spain's court or a high level military officer. Each of the locks are marked "Paul/Montmain Fils" and have light engraving accents and gilt cock screws. Paul Monmain was active in the St. Entienne area c.1710-1745 and supplied arms to the Marquis de Castellano in 1743 per Heer's "Der Neue Stockel" p. 821. The "Fils" marking indicates they were produced with or by his son Jean Baptiste Montmain likely around the 1730s-1740s. The frizzens have fierce looking mustachioed faces with palmette style caps. The barrels have silver ribs with floral engraving (mostly palmettes) and blade front sights, gold bands at the muzzles, golden designs next to the front sights, attractive finial designs at the front of the octagonal breech sections with golden borders and floral designs, and gold lined vents. The upper tangs are dished to act as rear sights. The furniture is all silver with primarily cast floral patterns, a male bust on the pommel caps, and martial motifs on the sides of the tendril pommels. The stock have floral carving between the breech and the thumb plates and at the forend. The pistols are set within a burl walnut case with brass fittings. The interior is lined in purple velvet and holds the pistols upright. The center divider between the pistols holds a stiletto type dagger with an "EDC" monogram on the handle and silver fitting. The lower section below the pistols holds a variety of small matching loading and maintenance tools as well as the key, eight lead balls, and some patches and wadding.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with 90% original gold finish, attractive light aged patina on the silver, mottled brown patina on most of the barrels, gray and brown patina on the locks, some light pitting, and minor marks. The stock has crisp carving, chips around the lock panels primarily at the front, a series of small dark repairs concentrated on the back of the wrist, and light scratches. The markings and designs throughout are primarily crisp, and the locks are mechanically excellent.

Fine overall with 90% original gold finish, attractive light aged patina on the silver, mottled brown patina on most of the barrels, light gray and brown patina on the locks, some light pitting, and scattered minor marks and scratches. The stock has crisp carving, a series of small dark repairs concentrated on the back of the wrist, slight cracks and small chips around the lock panels, and general light scratches. The markings and designs throughout are primarily crisp, and the locks are mechanically excellent. The case is very good with some subtle splices, cracks, and repairs on the exterior and mild wear on the lining. The accessories are fine and have some mild wear. A few items have minor cracks. This is overall a fine and very attractive set. The silver furniture is particularly fine and desirable.
