Manufactured circa 1880-1890. With browned damascus barrels inlaid at each breech end with a gold line, and raised flat rib with ramp mounted bead front sight, blued elevation adjustable back sight, and inlaid with gold band and spray of scrollwork and the maker's signature "RIEGER IN MÜNCHEN". The right barrel is rifled and the left barrel smoothbore for ball or shot. Gray casehardened action with carved fences, upper tang fitted with a folding aperture rear sight, permanently attached forearm and Lefaucheux type rotary underlever with shaped dark horn grip. Gray casehardened back-action side locks and scrolled trigger guard with pierced and scrolled walnut finger rest behind. The trigger plate with a set trigger for the right lock and standard trigger for the left lock. Figured 13 3/4 inch stock carved in relief with a chamois in a rocky landscape behind the raised cheekpiece, and checkered grip panels and checkered forearm. Steel buttplate engraved with the serial number "4175" on the tang. Iron sling stud beneath the butt and iron sling mount beneath the barrels, engraved in low relief with scrolling foliage and shells against a dark matte ground throughout. This gun bears the crowned "V" Vorratszeichen mark denoting pre-1891 manufacture. Provenance: Property of a German Prince, the great, great grandchild of Emperor Franz Josef I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. Another combination gun (serial number "4174") and a rifle (serial number "4176") from the same stand of arms were sold in the December 2017 Premiere Sale, lots 3281 and 3282.

Very good. The barrels retaining much original browned finish with some rubbing at the muzzles, numerous minor storage and handling blemishes and marks, some scattered spots of surface corrosion and surface corrosion marking. The gold inlay remains intact. Some minor discoloration to the casehardened parts, generally much light gray casehardened finish remains. The engraving is clear and sharp throughout with some minor rubbing on exposed parts such as the trigger guard scroll. The stock has numerous storage and handling gouges, scratches and bruises, there is a small crack on the right side of the forearm. The trigger for the rifle barrel sets correctly. Mechanically excellent.
