Description:

A letter from the makers accompanies this lot confirming that this gun was finished on 27 October 1903 with 30 inch Siemens steel barrels and was ordered from New York. The " F Model" designation in the Greener records indicate that this gun is a Facile Princeps non-ejector and as the gun features Gardner fences the grade would be around an F 40 (40 guineas cost). With blacked barrels each engraved with sprays of scrollwork heightened with silver inlays at the breech. Matted rib with bead front sight and signed "W.W. GREENER. ST. MARY'S SQUARE. BIRMINGHAM. WINNER AT THE LONDON GUN TRIALS 1875 TO 1897". Scroll and game scene engraved scallop backed treble grip action with carved serpentine fences, blued top lever and automatic safety with gold inlaid "SAFE". Trigger guard engraved with a further game scene involving two dogs. Figured 14 7/8 inch semi-pistol grip stock with checkered grip, forearm and panels on each side behind the action. Black composite butt plate, dark horn forearm tip, the stock and the forearm tip each inlaid with small diamond shaped bright metal inserts. Weight: 7 lbs. 3 oz., Birmingham nitro proof marks, 2 3/4 inch chambers (1 1/4 oz. proof), bored approx. 5/8 and 7/8 choke, barrel dimensions: right proved at 13/1, measuring .732, minimum wall thickness 31; left proved at 13/1, measuring .731, minimum wall thickness 35. In recent canvas and leather case, the lid with reproduction Greener trade labels.

Rating Definition:

The barrels have been professionally reblacked and have some light storage and handling marking, the engraving at the breech ends is softened, some wear to silver inlay. The action retains traces of original faded casehardened finish, the engraving is softened throughout and is worn on the sides of the fences. The top lever retains much blued finish, apparently original. The trigger guard has been brushed bright with loss of definition to the engraving, the tang has been polished bright with no trace of engraving or serial number remaining. The stock has been refinished and has numerous storage and handling marks, bruises and scratches. The checkering on the grip has been refreshed. Butt worn, a makers name removed. The barrels are loose on the action. Mechanically fine. Case is in very good condition.
