Description:

Manufactured in 1930. The accompanying factory letter confirms the 5 inch barrel in .38 Super, blue finish, type of grips and factory engraving when it was individually shipped to Donald G. Geddes (address unavailable) on May 9, 1930, as part of a 2 gun shipment. The factory records indicate that this pistol was originally shipped from the factory as one of a consecutively serialized pair. The pistol features an intricate full coverage factory floral scroll and floral blossom engraving. The profuse engraving is similar to a motif by William H. Gough as pictured on a .38 Super slide in R.L. Wilson's "The Book of Colt Engraving" on page 322. Note that the engraving has Gough's characteristic shading background lines and these lines are engraved through the serial number. As Wilson points out, "Generally craftsman used a scroll décor to empathize or to border the serial number" (see page 329). A fan pattern adorns the upper areas around the trigger. The slide has the two-line Colt address/patent dates on the left side and "COLT SUPER .38/AUTOMATIC" followed by a Rampant Colt on the right side. The trigger guard has the letter "T" and a Colt triangle proof on the left side and the number "60" on the right side. It has a two-tone Colt magazine with engraved base.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The pistol retains 99% plus of the original blue finish showing a few minor dings on the trigger guard. The grips are very fine with a small area of chipping near the bottom (right panel) and some minor handling marks. The grip panels have attractive color and grain. Mechanically excellent. A must have documented factory engraved Super 38 for the serious Colt collector.
