Description:

Model 1903 NRA Sales Rifle manufactured by the Springfield Armory in 1915. This rifle is accompanied by star gauge card stamped with the rifle serial number. A notation on the back of the card states that this rifle was originally owned by "Uncle Fred Pedersen" who used the rifle as a member of the "N.Y.C. NAT'L GUARD CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM AT CAMP PERRY, O." c. 1915. The initials "FMP" are carved in the left side of the stock wrist immediately above the "J.S.A." final inspection mark. A brass collection tag stamped "158/Scott Duff" is attached to the upper sling swivel. The rifle has a blued barrel, upper and lower barrel bands, rear sight base, bolt, extractor, bolt sleeve, cocking piece, floor plate and trigger guard. The receiver has a dark, oil-quenched casehardened finish. The safety and "OFF" side of the magazine cut-off are color casehardened. The face of the rear sight leaf and "ON" side of the cut-off are bright. The stock and hand guard are oil-finished walnut. The rifle has the standard pre-WWI features that include: (1) "low wood" Style S stock with grasping grooves and single reinforcing bolt, (2) handguard with sight clearance cut and spring clips, (3) rear sight with large, concave, windage knob, small, concave binding screw with no groove in the knurl and 2,800 yard notch in the center of the leaf, (4) straight handle bolt with heat lot marking "18" on the bottom of the lug, (5) grooved trigger, and (6) fine checkered buttplate. The barrel is roll-stamped: "S A/Ordnance 'Shell & Flame' insignia/11-15" in three lines behind the front sight base. The receiver has the standard Springfield five-line marking with serial number using the large block letters adopted in 1908. The left side of the barrel is stamped "C40" mid-way between the rear sight base and the muzzle. The front of the trigger guard finial is stamped with a small "Shell & Flame" insignia above "N.R.A." which indicates the rifle is one of the selected and star gauged M1903 rifles sold to N.R.A. members between 1910 and 1917. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with the block letters "J.S.A." enclosed in a rectangle. An encircled, script "P" proofmark is stamped on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard. Small sub-inspection marks are stamped in the magazine cut-off recess and stock wrist behind the trigger guard. The rifle is complete with the original front sight cover. The barrel, correctly, is not stamped with the star gauge mark on the muzzle and star gauge numbers that were applied to star gauged barrels on National Match rifles following WWI. The 1910-1917 NRA Sales Model 1903 rifles were specially selected for superior finish and featured star gauged barrels. Very few of these rifles retain the star gauge card that originally accompanied each rifle. In addition to the star gauge card, the rifle is accompanied by a rifle score book with 1935 copyright date.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine. This rifle is all original and retains 90% plus of the original blue and color casehardened finish. There is some minor finish wear along the edges of the receiver, light cycling wear on the bolt and some handling marks on the floor plate and trigger guard. The edges of the buttplate show some finish loss. The stock and handguard are both in very fine overall condition with crisp final inspection mark and clear proofmark; wear is limited to non-factory carved initials at wrist, a few scattered and insignificant handling marks. The star-gauge card is missing the bottom half and upper right corner but the rifle serial number "613663" stamped on the card is clear. The Model 1903 NRA Sales Rifles were the pick of Springfield Armory and Rock Island Arsenal production. A NRA Sales Rifle with the original star-gauge card is rare.
