This revolver is likely one of a kind. The end label on the shipping sleeve/outer box lists this revolver as "Nickel and Gold finish Colt 150th Engraving Sampler Prototype" and confirms the grips. Note that the revolver does have a full factory gold plate finish. The serial number also dates to 1982 a few years before the 150th anniversary. It has factory engraving based on patterns used by four engravers throughout Colt's history. The engravers' names and period at Colt are inscribed and filled with black enamel on the left grip as follows: "R. Henshaw 1831/L. Nimschke 1850-1900/C. Helfricht 1871-1921/G. Spring 1975." The backside of each grip has the serial number and "CS3196" in red. The back strap has the 150th anniversary logo on top and "Colt Engraving Sampler" down the back. The presence of George Spring suggests he engraved the revolver given the standard Engraving Sampler revolvers have "Contemporary" in the final spot.

Excellent with 98% plus original gold plating, some light scratches and marks, The right grip medallion is absent, but the grips are otherwise excellent with only mild handling and storage marks. The shipping box is fair with significant tearing. The blue box is very good with mild storage wear. Mechanically excellent. Overall an excellent and likely one of a kind factory prototype revolver featuring classic engraving patterns and a flashy gold-plated finish.
