Exceptional Early Production U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1903 NRA Sporter Bolt Action Rifle

This is a exceptional example of a very early US Springfield Model 1903 "N.R.A." marked sales rifle that was manufactured in 1908. It has the original early pre-war rust blued metal finish with the oil-quenched hardened receiver with an early style walnut stock and handguard set. These NRA Sales rifles were sold only through the D.C.M. to N.R.A. members with this being probably the earliest NRA Sales rifle we have ever seen as these usually didn't start until around 1910/11 through late 1915. They were issued by both Springfield Armory and Rock Island Arsenal and although not marked with the traditional "star-gauge" stamp on the muzzle, the barrels were air-gauged for bore quality to ensure they were the best available barrels for the N.R.A. members and target shooters. They are identified by the "N.R.A./Ordnance Shell and Flame" stamped on the forward section of the trigger guard to denote that they were sold through the D.C.M. to an N.R.A. member. It has the standard four-line, Springfield Armory receiver markings over serial number "375358". This example has the early barrel markings of "SA/Shell and Flame/10-08" that is correctly fitted with the blade front sight with the standard tangent rear sight graduated 2-28 (200-2800 yards). It is fitted with an early all blued, straight handled bolt that has a single small gas escape hole on the underside that is stamped with a single inspector "L" under the bolt handle with a single letter "I" on the underside of the lug. It is fitted with its early "no-bolt", straight grip "S" walnut stock with finger grooves on the sides with a early two clip handguard. The left side has a crisp, boxed "B.H.M." cartouche with a non-serified, circled "P" proof on the underside of the wrist. It is fitted with the early checkered steel buttplate with trapdoor. Inside the trapdoor is a early nickel plated oiler. The rifle is not a 30-06, but chambered for the Hoffer-Thompson .22 Gallery.

ConditionExcellent with 95% plus of its original blue metal finish with only minor edge and high spot wear with some slight blue loss on the trigger guard bow, and the front edge of the floorplate. There are a couple areas of very minor blue flaking on the top and side of the receiver ring and also on the front barrel band, otherwise its excellent overall. The stock and handguard are both in excellent condition with nice crisp cartouche on the side and both only showing some minor handling marks and scratches in a couple places. Mechanically excellent. A super, very high condition early NRA marked Springfield Model 1903 sales rifle.
