Description:

This is a very scarce example of the improved French M1918 semi-automatic rifle manufactured by the French Arsenal of MAS. This design was actually developed in 1918 as an improved and shortened version of the earlier M1917 rifle. There were approximately 4,000 of these rifle manufactured all in 1919 that remained in use circa 1919-1926. They were all chambered for the 8 mm Lebel cartridge, which was replaced by the 7.5 French cartridge in 1928. It features a shorter more manageable barrel length with an improved gas system that was easier to clean in the field. It still used the extended and permanently attached magazine box on the underside of the receiver; however, it now featured a new "hold-open" device to keep the bolt to the rear after the last round was fired. The right side of the receiver is marked "MANUFACTURES NATIONALE/M.A. S1919 MlE1918" over serial number "F2520". This series of rifles was developed at the end of WWI, and it is considered to be the second gas-operated semi-automatic rifle used by the French Army. It has the original military style tangent rear sight, shortened walnut Mannlicher style stock and handguard. The rifle hand cycles and functions correctly, and the gas block and brass seal are complete as originally manufactured; however, we cannot determine if it has been deactivated to a straight pull only version. Just based on the foregoing and the overall appearance of not having been overhauled, we make the assumption it is complete and functional. Currently, it has matching serial numbers on the forend, buttstock, and operating rod on the right side; however, the plate on the underside of the action is numbered "F2034".

Rating Definition:

Fine as assembled (see above) with 75% of the original blackish finish overall with wear on the magazine box and complete trigger guard plate. The bolt assembly and internal parts remaining in the white as originally manufactured. The stock and forend are both in fine condition with a nice original oil finish appearance showing numerous light pressure dents, scratches and handling marks on the sides from light use. A nice example of a late Mle 1918 rifle.
