Description:

David Pollock (1795-1876) worked in Allegheny County and Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. A very similar rifle by Pollock is pictured on page 320 in plate 261 of "The Pennsylvania-Kentucky Rifle" by Kauffman. Henry Bayers (Beyers) was a barrel maker north of Pittsburgh at Pine Creek around 1831-1837. The rifle has traditional blade and notch sights, "D. Pollock" hand signed in script on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and breech, "H. BAYERS" stamped on the left flat at the breech, lock by Earps & McMain of Philadelphia with light scroll and burst engraving, adjustable single trigger, unmarked silver thumb escutcheon, lightly engraved side plate, extensively engraved patch box with pierced side plates and finial, lightly engraved toe plates, and an silver oval cheek piece inlay with seventeen engraved stars and patriotic bald eagle motif.

Rating Definition:

Very good as restored including reconversion to flintlock. The iron has a dark brown blend of aged and artificial patina, areas of mild pitting, a small crack at the toe of the lock, and some tool marks and dents on the barrel. The brass and silver have aged patinas. The refinished stock is fine as fairly discretely repaired (including some large splices and epoxy) and has multiple cracks/breaks, some chips, and attractive flame figure. The engraving and markings are mostly distinct. Mechanically fine. Overall a very attractive Western Pennsylvania long rifle.
