Description:

Simeon North has been called "the first official pistol maker of the U.S." due to his early contracts with the U.S. government for pistols from 1799 to 1829. He went on to produce rifles and carbines for the government, most famously the "Hall-North" carbines. These Model 1811 Army pistols were part of a transitional period in martial pistol production between the pin fastened Model 1808 Navy belt pistols and the Model 1813 pistols that used double strapped barrel bands. Per page 144 of "Historic Pistols: The American Martial Flintlock, 1760-1845," only 1,000 pairs of these pistols were ordered in a November 18, 1811, contract, but they were not delivered until 1814. Flayderman indicated only an estimated 606 pistols are believed to have been delivered with pin fastened stocks while the remaining pistols were updated with the Model 1813 style bands. The pistol has a small brass front sight (not standard), "P/US" on top at the breech, "P" on the back strap, "V/IIHP" on the left stock flat, "eagle/U.STATES" and "S.NORTH/BERLIN/CON" on the lock, "U" on many of the small parts, and a correct hickory ramrod with swelled tip. Out of caution, the pistol was not disassembled to check the batch numbers on the breech plug and stock.

Rating Definition:

Very good as reconverted to flintlock configuration with mottled gray and brown patina, minor pitting, attractive aged patina on the brass, mild overall wear, some minor tension cracks in the otherwise fine stock, proud back strap, and distinct markings. Mechanically fine. This is a very rare model and an important element of any complete U.S. martial flintlock pistol collection.
