Description:

The Long Land Pattern was the standard British musket for much of the 18th century and remained in use by both the Americans and the British during the American Revolution. The barrel has a bayonet stud/sight on top near the muzzle, "16 REGT" on top ahead of the breech, and a groove cut at the breech for a rear sight. The fairly straight profile lock is marked with "TOWER" on the tail and the Georgian cipher at the center and has a bridled pan. The trigger guard has a sling swivel on the front, but no provision for a sling swivel in the forend is visible. The escutcheon has "I/48" (company and rack number). Both the side plate and trigger guard are convex and have teats. The buttplate has been squared off at the tang instead of having the usual long tang, and the stock lacks the bulbous swell at the entry pipe and the usual stylized flats. It includes a socket bayonet also marked "I." Regimental markings became fairly standard after 1753. The 16th Regiment of Foot served in Ireland during the Seven Years War (French & Indian War) and in 1767 shipped off to Florida and where they were based out of Pensacola. During the American Revolution, they moved to New York for a short period in 1776, but returned to Florida and Georgia which were vulnerable to Spanish and French attacks. In 1778, the Spanish attacked the region from their base in Louisiana. In 1779, the 16th withdrew to Baton Rouge and then fought the Americans and French combined forces in Savannah before returning to defend Pensacola from a Spanish attack in 1781 but ultimately lost the battle. Due to their losses, they returned to England in 1782.

Rating Definition:

Very good as restocked and modified, likely in period, and later reconverted to flintlock. The iron has dark brown and gray patina, moderate oxidation and pitting concentrated on the vent, and mild scrapes and dings. The markings are identifiable but partially obscured. The brass has aged patina throughout. The stock has cracking in the butt, slight hairline cracks elsewhere, repaired crack on the left side of the forend, moderate scrapes and dings, and mild overall wear. Mechanically fine.
