Description:

The India Pattern was used throughout the British Empire from the 1790s through the mid-19th century and is based on a pattern used previously already in use by the East India Company. They were prominently used in the French Revolutionary Wars and Napoleonic Wars. This example has a bayonet stud/front sight, "No 48 *" and two Tower proofs over a removed original unit marking on top of the barrel near the breech, Georgian cipher and "TOWER" marked lock with swan neck cock (1809 or earlier), "*87" marked buttplate tang, trumpet head iron ramrod, and a socket bayonet marked with "crown/29," "OSBORN," and "*/[?]I." The marking on the barrel could represent the 48th Regiment of Foot which fought under General Sir Arthur Wellesley during the Peninsular War, lost their commanding officer (Lieutenant Colonel George Henry Duckworth) at the Battle of Albuera in 1811 and fought in several other battles against the French before being sent to Ireland and then India.

Rating Definition:

Good with a dark blend of patina and applied brown, mild pitting including on the bayonet, the noted period remarked markings, repaired barrel tang, mostly legible markings, and dark aged patina on the iron. The refinished stock is fair with chipping around the lock, a larger chip is at the toe and heel, some faint cracks, and general scratches and dings. Mechanically fine.
