Description:

The roughly 16 inch horn is inscribed "WILLIAM SOUTHWORTH/MADE AT ASHFORD MAY/ye II AD 1775" and has a variety of animal and floral designs. The plug has a small round mirror. There is no spout plug or provisions for a strap. William Southworh (1758-1849) of Ashford, Windham Co., Connecticut, served in the militia during the American War of Independence. "The Record of Connecticut Men in the Military and Naval Service During the War of the Revolution" list a William Southworth as serving throughout most of the war including in "Lexington Alarm List" of men who marched from Coventry in response to alarm raised before the Battles of Lexington & Concord on April 19, 1775. He enlisted as a private in the 2nd Company of the Fifth Regiment under Colonel David Waterbury on May 10, 1775, and was discharged on October 17, 1775. The 5th Connecticut Regiment assigned to the New York Department in 1775 and served at Fort Ticonderoga from which they participated capture of Fort Saint John and Montreal before mustering out in December. At that time, it was common for enlistments to conclude at year's end. What he did in 1776 is unclear. He then enlisted in the First Regiment Connecticut Line Infantry as a corporal in Captain John Shumway's company for a three year term starting in May of 1777 (thus including the famous winter at Valley Forge). Notes indicate he was held prisoner from April 23 to July 22 of 1778 which is somewhat surprising given the lack of action in April. He reenlisted on June 27, 1780, and served until Dec. 2, 1780.

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with even moderate overall wear and age.
