Remington only manufactured an estimate 5,000 Keene magazine rifles between 1880 and 1883. Production was limited due to competition with the Winchester-Hotchkiss rifles. This example is an incredibly scarce sporting rifle mounted with a multi-point checkered round knob pistol grip stock with a sporting forend cap and part octagon barrel. The pistol grip stock and part octagon barrel were special order features, an uncommon set of features in today's collector market. It has a dovetail blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight. "40/60" is marked on the left side rear of the action, and the top of the tail piece is marked with the three-line address and patent information. This example has no visible serial number. The buttplate has a compartment (cleaning rod not included).

Fine. The rifle retains 80% original blue finish showing some thinning to a brown. The magazine tube shows two circular rotation marks ahead of the forend cap. The buttplate retains 40% original case colors, otherwise faded to a gray. The stock is fine as repaired on the left side with some minor handling marks and a few blemishes in the overall crisp checkering. The action needs work due to a broken trigger return spring.
