This an example of an early deluxe Winchester Model 1885 high wall single shot rifle that was factory rebarreled to 38-55 WCF caliber. This rifle was originally manufactured in 1888 and has originally been fitted with a 30 inch full octagon 32-40 barrel, standard trigger, scarce, checkered pistol grip stock with a crescent buttplate and a checkered forend. It also has been fitted with a very desirable early Winchester tang rear sight with the spirit level in the rear sight dovetail. The tang sight is marked on the lower stem: "PAT. JAN. 29/79". The top of the barrel in front of the rear sight dovetail slot is marked with the later Winchester two line, Winchester factory address with no patent dates. The breech end of the barrel is stamped with a single Winchester circled "P" proof, which is the Winchester "mail order" proof indicating the barrel was a replacement shipped to the customer, followed by the standard circled Winchester "WP" proof, followed by the caliber "38-55". The lower pistol grip tang is marked with the factory "-PAT.OCT.7TH.79-" followed by the serial number "20024". It is fitted with a deluxe 2X nicely figured, checkered pistol grip stock and checkered forearm; both are fitted with the standard ebony inserts. It has a blued barrel with the color case hardening on the receiver, breech block, loading lever and buttplate. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with a 30 inch no. 3 octagon barrel in .32-40 caliber, plain trigger and checkered pistol grip stock when received in warehouse on January 30, 1888 and shipped the same day.

Very fine as factory rebarreled with 97% of the factory blued finish on the barrel and 70% case colors remaining on the receiver, breech block and buttplate. The loading lever, and buttplate case colors are fading somewhat; however, the receiver and breech block retain strong case colors overall that are just starting to fade out. The buttstock and forend retain half of their high polish finish thinning on the forend from use and holding with only minor handling marks overall.
