The accompanying Cody Firearms Records Office confirmation states the serial number on this rifle was applied on June 3, 1896, and lists this rifle with a 26 inch octagon barrel in .44 caliber, plain trigger, plain pistol grip stock and shotgun buttplate when it was received in the warehouse on July 17, 1903, and shipped on July 28. Dovetail blade and elevation adjustable sights on a barrel with the two-line address/patent date marking and "44 WCF." The upper tang has the three-line model/patent date information. The special order smooth pistol grip stock has a hard rubber factory grip cap and smooth steel shotgun buttplate.

Fine, retaining 50% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina mixed with minor-moderate pitting. The buttplate has a mottled brown-gray patina. 30% original case colors remain on the hammer and lever. The sanded and reoiled wood is very good with minimal handling evidence. Mechanically excellent.
