Manufactured in 1878, this is a second pattern rifle with the thumb print dust cover and screw-attached guide rail. German silver blade dovetail front sight with folding sporting leaf rear sight. The barrel is marked with the Winchester address ahead of the rear sight. Full length tubular magazine with casehardened hammer and lever. The upper barrel tang is marked with the model designation "Model.1876." The serial number is located on the rear of the lower frame tang. Smooth straight grip stock with blue forearm tip and crescent buttplate with trapdoor compartment.

Very good. The barrel retains traces of original blue in sheltered areas; the balance is now a mottled brown patina with spotting and scattered surface scratches. The frame retains about 10% faded original blue finish in protected areas; the balance is now a mottled gray/brown patina exhibiting spotting and some overall handling marks. The hammer and lever show faint but visible case color patterns, but the case colors on the lever have darkened and turned bright on the hammer. The wood is good with pressure marks, scratches throughout and a 1 inch crack by the upper tang. The upper tang has a replacement screw. The action is very good, but lever is slightly loose.
