Description:

An unusual combination of features on this Model 1890 will surely have collectors taking notice. We certainly have never seen anything like it! The rifle was manufactured in 1913 and features a factory no. 7 engraving consisting of near full coverage arabesque scrolls and fine border work on the receiver. The engraving is described and illustrated in Winchester's "Highly Finished Arms" on page 17 (see R.L. Wilson's "Winchester Engraving" for a reprint). The engraving extends to the bolt, scope, and buttplate. The scope rings and scope tube are adorned with engraved scroll flourishes. The Winchester A5 scope is adjustable for windage and elevation. There are standard Winchester markings including factory oval proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech and "WRF" on front of the frame, Lyman beaded blade front sight and folding tang peep sight. The barrel is threaded and fitted with a scarce Maxim Model 1920 silencer (see "B"). The highly figured forearm and pistol grip stock feature Winchester style E checkering and hard rubber factory grip cap. The left side of the upper tang is marked "10615," and the lower tang is marked "3004." "10615" is repeated on the stock butt and buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine. The rifle retains 85% plus original blue finish showing cycling and high edge wear. The scope retains the vast majority of original blue finish. The wood is excellent showing minor handling evidence and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. A Model 1890 that definitely has it all! A highly unusual combination of features that you would spend a lifetime to find! This extraordinary rifle is reserved for the serious Winchester collector who desires to have the best!

B) Scarce Maxim Model 1920 Silencer with Original Container and Papers, Class III/NFA Silencer

Manufacturer: Maxim Silencer Company
Model: 1920
Type: Silencer
Gauge: 22
Barrel:
Finish: blue
Grip:
Stock:
Item Views: 9816
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 50
Class: Class III
Description:

Originally developed prior to World War I, the Maxim Silencer was one of the first portable firearm suppressors to hit the market. Working on then-novel mechanical principles that have become industry standards, the Maxim uses a series of stacked and perforated baffles to redirect and manage the expansion of spent propellant gas from the muzzle of the firearm, reducing the volume and velocity of the gas and cutting down on the resultant report. Well liked by the general public, the Maxim took a terminal hit in 1934 with the passage of the National Firearms Act; a piece of kit which cost between 7 and 10 dollars now had a mandatory $200 transfer tax hanging around its neck like a dead albatross. The number of people who bothered registering their Maxims is significantly low, as most decided to either dispose of the tiny little federal offense or to take their chances and keep using their now-illegal unregistered silencers when no one was watching (this being before the age of everyone posting their felonies and indiscretions on social media). As a result, original registered Maxims are hard to find in any condition, which is quite a shame in light of their place in the history of arms development. The main blued steel body runs 5 7/8 inches long and 7/8 inch wide, with the manufacturer's mark at the base and the mandatory serial number added to the muzzle cap, with an appropriate stack of individual baffles on the interior. Included with the silencer is a steel baffle tool (a long rod used to remove the baffles for cleaning and maintain proper alignment during re-installation), several sheets of instructions, information and advertising, and an original shipping tube/storage container which retains a vintage shipping label to the Flanegin (sic) Hardware Company of Logansport, Indiana.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, with 80% of the original blue finish, showing areas of brown and gray patina along with some light handling marks. The baffles are in fine order with mild spotting, and the interior shows some light wear and firing residue appropriate to age and use. The shipping tube is fine with mild stains and wear, and the papers are good. A rare chance to own one of the forefathers of modern firearm suppressor technology. NOTE: This Suppressor is a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) under the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 478.
