Description:

Manufactured in London in 1855 within the London Model 1851 Navy range with the distinctive London Navy iron grip frame, one-line "-ADDRESS COL. COLT. LONDON-" barrel address, "crown/GP" and "crown/V" proofs on the barrel and cylinder, "broad arrow/WD" War Department mark on the left side of the barrel lug and grip, "crown/15" stamp on the left side of the butt, "COLTS/PATENT" marking on the frame, standard cylinder roll-scene, and all matching serial numbers, including the grip which has the serial number hand marked in ink and a series of "/' marks stamped in the back strap inlet. The grip has a hole drilled in the lower section for affixing a lanyard. Colt only received orders for 14,000 revolvers for the Royal Army and 9,500 for the Royal Navy per Swayze in "'51 Colt Navies." The National Army Museum suggests the Army received only 5,000 and, like Swayze, confirms they were "distributed to officers and infantry sergeant-majors."

Rating Definition:

Fine with 40% original blue finish on the barrel, 50% plus original blue on the cylinder, strong original blue on the trigger, 50% original case colors on the frame, smooth gray-brown patina on the grip frame and most of the faded areas, minor oxidation, light scratches and nicks throughout, mild edge wear, and crisp markings. The grip is very good and has moderate edge wear, the noted hole, and numerous small pressure marks and scrapes. Mechanically excellent. Overall a very attractive Model 1851 Navy variation missing from many advanced collections of both British martial arms and Colt percussion revolvers.
