Description:

This is a spectacular conversion of a Model 1861 Navy Percussion Revolver. The factory conversion modifications include: 1) plugged loading lever hole and attachment of an ejector housing by a screw running through the left side of the barrel lug, 2) modification of the cylinder, identical to the 1851 Navy, 3) a center fire firing pin is attached through a center slot on the face of the hammer attached by two rivets, 4) installation of a breech plate (so called Third Model) without integral rear sight and 5) a loading gate attached by a screw through a hole in the base of the gate; the gate is held open or shut by flat spring screwed to the frame. The revolver has a blue finish on the barrel, cylinder and ejector head, the frame and hammer are casehardened, and the trigger guard and back strap are silver plated brass. The top of the barrel is marked "-ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S.AMERICA-", the left side of the frame is marked with the two July patent dates, and the cylinder is roll engraved with the naval engagement scene and "COLTS PATENT 566 / 306". The left side of the trigger guard is stamped "36 CAL". The serial number "32306" is visible on the underside of the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The loading gate is stamped with an assembly number "2306". It is fitted with a smooth one piece walnut grip. Most of the percussion revolvers were returned to the factory for conversion in 1873, 1875 and 1876.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The barrel retains 97% of the bright original high polished finish with some minor muzzle wear, scattered minor flaking and some light spotting. The ejector rod housing is a mix of smooth brown patina and 70% original finish. The cylinder retains 95% of the original finish with a pronounced drag line, small areas of gray and brown and a clear scene. The frame and hammer retain 98% of the bright case colors. The trigger guard and back strap retain 50% of the original silver plating with the other half having silvered out. The exposed brass has an aged natural patina. The grips are excellent plus with almost all of the varnish remaining, some very minor wear on the lower edges and a few minor dings. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
