Description:

This is one of the finest Model 1849 Pocket Model "Wells Fargo" variation; with a 3 inch barrel, no provisions for a loading lever, and a solid lug without loading slots we have seen. Only 4,000 of this variation are estimated to have been produced. The origin of the variation is not known. Perhaps there was still demands for revolvers styled closer to the Model 1848 Baby Dragoon which was less likely to snag due to the lack of a loading lever which was largely unnecessary since the odds of these self-defense revolvers being reloaded on the run during a fight were very slim. Keep in mind that single and two shot pistols were very common in this period. If five shots from a trusty Colt didn't subdue an attacker, most in the period would likely have resorted to a knife or their fists. Manufactured in 1852 with the two-line New York City barrel address inside brackets, "COLTS/PATENT" marked on the left side of the frame, and the stage coach holdup scene on the cylinder. Matching numbers on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder, wedge, and arbor pin.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine. The barrel retains 90% plus original blue finish and the cylinder retains 60% original blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. All of the cylinder scene remains. 70% original case colors remain on the hammer and frame. Nearly all of the age darkened original silver remains on the trigger guard and back strap. The grip is excellent showing minimal handling marks and retaining nearly all of the original varnish. Mechanically excellent. Writer cannot recall a finer example ever offered at our auction!
