Description:

The frame dates to 1866, and the revolver was converted by the factory c. 1869-72, almost certainly before it ever left. This is the first London addressed and proofed Model 1860 Army Thuer Conversion we have ever sold. Thuer conversion revolvers were the first metallic cartridge Colts, and only 5,000 were manufactured including examples of the various late percussion era models. The conversion ring rotates which allows the user to safely carry the revolver fully loaded with the hammer down and has the 1868 patent marking on the left. These conversion fired specially designed Thuer cartridges that loaded from the front. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "-ADDRESS COL. COLT LONDON-" and has a German silver blade front sight. London proofmarks are on the left side of the barrel, and it has the iron grip frame used on revolvers destined for the English market. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the standard naval battle scene and "COLTS PATENT" marking. "5" is stamped on the back of the cylinder and the distinctive Thuer conversion breech plate, and "5H" is marked in the hammer well. The frame has the "COLTS/PATENT" marking on the left. Matching serial numbers are found on the barrel, frame, grip straps, wedge, and cylinder pin.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus with strong traces of bright original finish showing under moderate surface oxidation/pitting and patina, general scratches and dings, and generally legible marking. The wear is consistent throughout. The grip is fine and has some chipping at the toe and numerous scrapes and small dents. Mechanically fine.
