Description:

The Model 1842s were the last smoothbore muskets manufactured by the U.S. national armories and were made with thicker barrels on the assumption that many would eventually be rifled, which many were during their service life making original smoothbore examples like this desirable. This model was also the first martial arm manufactured by both Springfield and Harpers Ferry with fully interchangeable parts. Model 1842 muskets were used in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. This "1853" dated example has standard markings and features and includes a "US" marked socket bayonet.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus, as issued, with exceptional original armory bright finish with a few scattered light handling marks. The wood is also excellent with a few scattered handling marks, a couple minor dings, and crisp edges. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is excellent. One will look a long time to find a better example!
