Description:

The Model 1816 muskets are among the most widely used muskets in American history and were used in various conflicts with Native Americans such as the Black Hawk War and Seminole Wars, the Mexican-American War, and even into the Civil War. They were produced from 1816 until the introduction of the short lived Model 1840. Many were converted to percussion during their long service lives making flintlock examples especially desirable. This musket falls in the Type II production range but shows no sign of having been browned. It does have the swivels on the trigger guard bow and middle band. The lock is dated "1825" and has the standard armory markings. The separate lock components mostly have "V/5" markings along with other different letters on various parts. "WB" is stamped in the lock inlet. The barrel has "V/P/eagle head" proofs at the breech. Several components including the screws have "8" markings. The left stock flat has two cartouches (one "EB/3") and a "V/??" stamp. The tag on the trigger guard identifies it as item 208 from the F.W. Roebling III collection which is known to have contained a wide array of colonial and early American firearms.

Rating Definition:

Near fine with mottled gray patina on most of the iron, some faint pitting and oxidation, some oil staining, attractive aged patina on the brass flash pan, and general minor wear. The restored stock is very good with cracking and repairs visible in the area around the nose of the lock and the front of the trigger guard, minor tension crack at the rear lock screw, minor marks and scratches, and faint marking. Mechanically excellent (stiff mainspring).
