Description:

This is an early "Type III" musket (1808-1814) dated "1808" at the tail of the lock and buttplate tang. It has the standard markings and features. The bayonet is marked "US" on the neck (does not fit properly). Pre-War of 1812 Model 1795s are always desirable. Around 45,000-50,000 of these Type III muskets were manufactured. The Model 1795 was the first official U.S. manufactured infantry weapon, was based on the French Model 1766 muskets heavily imported and used in the American Revolution, and served as the main U.S. weapon in our second fight against Great Britain and their Native American allies in the War of 1812.

Rating Definition:

Fair as reconverted to flintlock configuration with a high vent, dark brown mix of applied artificial brown finish and deep patina over mild pitting, some obscured markings, tool marks, and various marks and scratches. The stock is also fine and has a crack at the rear lock screw, slivers absent and some cracks along the edges of the forend, partially smoothed carved markings on the butt, and general scrapes and dings. Mechanically fine. The bayonet is also fine and has mottled gray and brown patina.
