Description:

This musket has mostly French "Charleville" Model 1763/1766 pattern features other than the .75 caliber bore which was the size used on the British "Brown Bess" muskets, the British bayonet, and the more "Roman nose" shape to the butt. Many muskets were assembled from a mix of mainly European parts by American gunsmiths in the Revolutionary War and following years. It has a bayonet lug on the bottom of the barrel near the muzzle, blade front sight on the rear strap of the upper barrel band, "IBT" on the underside of the lock, what appears to be "69" partially visible at the breech end of the barrel, "TT" on the back of the side plate, "C+A-J" (J backwards) carved in the right side of the butt, and an "*/A" on the buttplate tang. The consignor states that the "A" could have been David Ames, who was the Chief Armorer at Springfield.

Rating Definition:

Fair as reconverted to flintlock configuration with a dark coat of varnish, filing marks on the lock, moderate pitting and overall wear, and chipping and numerous scrapes and dings on the stock. Mechanically fine.
