Description:

Measuring 37 1/2 inches overall, with a 31 3/4 inch double fuller blade, decorated on each side with a gold washed etched panel of patriotic and martial motifs, with "US" on the left and "IRON PROOF" on the spine. No maker or merchant markings are present, though the Iron Proof mark is traditionally associated with foreign-made blades (such as Sheffield or Solingen products); American jewelers often made high quality swords by sourcing the blades from overseas and fitting out the rest themselves. The hilt is gold washed, with fine sculpted oak leaf designs between the guard branches, a "screaming eagle" rear quillion, a gold wire sword knot, cast silver grip with alternating smooth and laurel wreath panels, and a helmet-shaped pommel with an American eagle on the back and the cap decorated with a large red stone in the center and a circle of 16 smaller purple gems. The scabbard is nickel finished, with floral patterns around the throat, sculpted heraldic dolphins for suspension hardware, and fine raised and sculpted decoration, including a spread-winged American eagle on the top band, an array of arms on the mid band, and a Union sergeant on the tip.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The very fine blade shows some light spotting and handling marks, with some small areas of heavier pitting and nicks on the edges. The gilt finish is very good overall, and the grip shows an aged patina, darker in the protected areas. The scabbard is very good, with some dark spots and handling marks.
