Development of the Peabody rifles and carbines began early in the Civil War but the war ended before they got any government contracts. Many foreign contracts were gained however which led to some of these rifles and carbines seeing action in the Franco-Prussian War. This carbine shows standard markings and features including oval "WC" foreign contract cartouche on the stock.

Rating Definition:

Very good, retains 75% plus original blue finish with a light scattering of brown patina, receiver is mostly a brown patina with strong case colors on the replacement hammer and lock plate, and the buttplate is mostly a mottled grey patina. The re-oiled wood is also good, with numerous minor to moderate dings, dents, and scratches consistent with use. Mechanically excellent.
