Manufactured by James H. Merrill of Baltimore and used during the Civil War, this is a first type with a brass patch box and lock marking without an American eagle. These carbines were fairly widely used amongst Union cavalry and many were captured and used by Confederate forces. The lock plate is marked "6933".

Rating Definition:

Fair, showing mostly a mottled grey-brown patina with some very faint traces of case color patterns on the lock and mostly a dark patina on the brass. The refinished, repaired wood has some scattered minor dings, dents, and scratches, a stabilized crack in the wrist, and a short minor crack near the front screw of the saddle ring bar. Mechanically excellent.
