Description:

This is rifle is part of the first U.S. Navy contract for 300 rifles from James Paris Lee. Initially Lee struck a contract with Sharps Rifle Company to manufacture the rifles, but shortly after they went bankrupt. Subsequently, the Lee parts and tooling equipment were transferred to Remington Arms Company, who completed the contract. The low serial number within that contract found on this example probably explains why it has the Sharps style magazine without the raised rib for a cut-off device. Approximately 1,300 total Model 1879s were received by the Navy through various contracts. This example shows standard markings and features along with "HN." inspection marks on various small parts and Springfield Trapdoor sights that are commonly seen on "first 300" contract examples.

Rating Definition:

Good, with traces of original blue finish in sheltered areas and the balance a mottled grey/brown patina. The re-varnished wood has numerous minor dings, dents, and scratches, and much of the varnish remains. Mechanically excellent.
