Description:

A total of 999 Second Model rifles were manufactured for the U.S. Navy in 1880-81. The safety and magazine cutoff are located on the top of the receiver, and the barrel is fitted with blade/stud front sight and notch and folding ladder rear sight graduated 1-5 and marked "R" on the left and 6-13 and marked "N" on the ladder. The left side of the receiver is marked with the three-line address and patent marking. The top on the left side of the receiver is stamped with the serial number followed by the Ordnance inspector's initials "HN." "HN." is also stamped on the bolt handle, lug, and barrel at the breech. The barrel is also stamped with the Springfield Armory "V/P/eagle head" proof and inspection marks and the U.S. Navy "W.W.K/US/anchor" inspection markings, "SWP/1881" and "21" cartouches are on the buttstock, and the buttplate is numbered "21". A slotted cleaning rod is included.

Rating Definition:

Good, with a few light patches of brown patina speckled amongst the overall bright polished finish. All of the markings are crisp and clear. The re-oiled wood has some scattered minor dings and dents from military use. Mechanically fair.
