Out of around 2,500-3,000 Maynard primed pocket revolvers manufactured by the Mass. Arms Co. c. 1850-1860, only around 900 were the early style which was smaller and had a manually revolved cylinder like this one. The cylinder is manually revolved between shots by depressing the small button ahead of the trigger and rotating the cylinder by hand. The matching serial number is on the primer door, frame under the door, grip frame, and grips. The assembly number "583" is on the underside of the top strap. The top strap has "MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS." and the primer door has "MAYNARD'S PATENT/SEP. 22. 1845." The cylinder is etched with scroll patterns, and the frame and primer door are engraved with light scrollwork patterns.

Fine with 50% of the darkened original silver plating on the trigger guard, 60% original blue on the barrel and latch, patches of strong original case colors on the hammer, mostly gray and brown patina on the balance, distinct markings and patterns, mild oxidation, and light scratches and marks. The grips are also fine and have some minor dings and scratches. The hammer does not always lock up when cocked, but it is otherwise mechanically fine.
