Description:

This rifle was manufactured in 1876-1881 (early two-line J.M. Marlin/Ballard markings on the left side of the frame) and has a wind gauge globe front sight, spirit level in the rear sight dovetail, the matching serial number along with "P" on the bottom of the barrel, "22" on the lower left flat near, matching numbered Schnabel tip forearm with horn inset, Vernier style peep sight, and smooth straight wrist stock with steel rifle buttplate. The overall configuration does not match any of the standard Ballard models suggesting it was special ordered.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall with 75% original blue and casehardened finish mixed with gray and brown patina, strong original oil finish and some subtle flame figure on the exceptionally fine wood, light oxidation and edge wear, some slight chips at the front of the comb from contact with the peep sight, some minor scratches and cracks, and splotches of discoloration on the barrel. Mechanically excellent. Overall a very fine example of an early Marlin-Ballard rifle with special order features.
