Description:

Manufactured by the Battery Gun Co. of Metamora, Michigan, as a full scale, fully functional reproduction of the original Model 1862 Gatling Gun. Designed by Richard Gatling, the 1862 used a series of interchangeable percussion chambers in lieu of the centerfire cartridges used on later models; while cumbersome by modern standards, on a battlefield dominated by the muzzle-loading rifle it represented a massive leap in firepower. This particular example has the percussion chambers replaced with a set of 40 bored-through chambers, 2 1/4 inches long with a 0.465 inch internal diameter at the front and the rear milled for a 0.51 inch wide and .07 inch thick rim (some slight variation between chambers); the exact chambering is not recorded, though it is close in dimensions to 45 Long Colt. The construction of the main body is brass, with the Battery Gun data plate on top, an array of blued barrels with blued support arms, and a pair of included blued magazines. The tripod is of steel and hardwood construction, with an elevation adjustment screw. Also included with the gun is a hardwood shipping case and some takedown/maintenance tools.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, with 95% plus original finish, with some mild handling marks overall, a bit of rubbing on the trunnions and tripod hardware, and a few areas of hand-print discoloration on the brass. Mild spotting is present on some of the chambers. Mechanically excellent.
